Straight and to the point, …so the video above on the left is my 13yr old son driving a 2 seater Hammerhead Mudhead 208R which comes equipped with reverse and a 208cc(6hp) electric star engine with a manual choke that is located under the driver seat for all weather starting. This machine is good for the entry level, gokart/buggie driver.

Let me start by telling a bit about the Mudhead and my likes and dislike about this fun little machine. Now of course this is just my opinion and hope you can get in the driver seat of one and make up your own mind about it. We’ll start in the “cockpit” per se. The seats independently adjustable, which is great if your little driver is a lot smaller than the passenger. Also, each seat has a three-point safety belt harness along with a roll cage that the harness’ are secured to. The Mudhead 208r has electronic components like electric start, headlights, and a horn, all of which are very convenient for the youngsters. With that being said, it also has a pull starter. And if for whatever reason your battery is dead or something with the electronics is preventing you from starting it up with your key it can be started and ran without any of the electronics functioning, An excellent feature. Under the acceleration (gas) pedal is a throttle governor that allows you manage how fast the mudhead is allowed to drive. This feature is great, it has worked really good for me because it allows my nieces’ and nephews which are smaller to get behind the wheel and get in on the fun. The tires are NOT the best tho, they seem to be pretty thin. I had a twig that couldn’t have been more than an 1/8th of an inch thick puncture a hole in one. Now it wasn’t the end of the world, but it was a big inconvenience because we were out on the trails. But as long as you go out prepared with some sort of emergency kit that includes a patch and puncture kit you should make it. Ground clearance is as not as it appears, the gokart sits a bit lower than it appears. The frame scraped on a 2inch concrete slab I drive over to get out of my yard. …Again, not the end of the world but just wish it sat higher or offered some sort of suspension adjustment or lift kit. The Mudhead doesn’t go extremely fast which in my opinion is a good thing because i can only assume that your rider is a beginner, and the last thing we need it our beginners losing control of the throttle and then of the gokart altogether. Now, of course the engine can be swapped out for a stronger faster one, but we’ll save that conversation for another blog. the gas tank is way too small for my liking. the small gas tank limits your driving range which you need to stay aware of if you don’t want to be left stranded on empty.

Choosing the right buggy go-kart for you and your kids requires careful consideration of factors like safety, size, terrain, and features. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you make the best choice:

1. Determine Who Will Use It

  • Age and Size of Riders: Look for age-appropriate models with adjustable seats and steering wheels to accommodate your kids as they grow.

  • Weight Capacity: Ensure the go-kart can support both you and your children if you plan to share it.

2. Safety Features

  • Roll Cage and Seat Belts: Look for go-karts with sturdy roll cages, seat belts, and padded seating for protection during rides.

  • Brakes: Ensure it has reliable braking systems (e.g., hydraulic or disc brakes).

  • Speed Control: Choose models with speed-limiting options or parental controls for younger riders.

  • Helmet and Gear Compatibility: Ensure your family has proper safety gear, including helmets and gloves.

3. Type of Go-Kart

  • Electric vs. Gas-Powered:

    • Electric: Quieter, easier to maintain, and eco-friendly. Ideal for kids or short rides.

    • Gas-Powered: More powerful, suitable for off-road use and longer rides.

  • Pedal Go-Karts: A good option for younger kids or for those who want a more manual, exercise-friendly experience.

4. Intended Use

  • Off-Road vs. On-Road:

    • Off-road go-karts need higher ground clearance, rugged tires, and a durable suspension system.

    • On-road go-karts can have smoother tires and are optimized for speed and handling on flat surfaces.

  • Terrain: Consider the type of terrain you'll ride on, like dirt, grass, or pavement.

5. Size and Build

  • Compact vs. Full-Size: Compact models are easier to store and transport. Full-size go-karts are better for long-term use.

  • Adjustable Features: Look for adjustable seats, pedals, and handlebars to ensure a comfortable fit.

6. Engine and Speed

  • Engine Size (for gas-powered): Smaller engines (50cc-100cc) are ideal for kids, while larger engines (125cc+) are better for adults or experienced riders.

  • Max Speed: Consider models with controlled or adjustable speed to match the rider's skill level.

7. Build Quality and Maintenance

  • Frame Material: Steel frames are durable and ideal for off-road use.

  • Ease of Maintenance: Electric go-karts require less maintenance than gas-powered ones, which need regular oil changes and engine care.

8. Budget

  • Set a budget and compare models within your range. Don't forget to include the cost of accessories like helmets, gloves, and protective gear.

9. Test Drive and Reviews

  • If possible, test drive different models or watch reviews to assess performance, comfort, and durability.

10. Brand and Warranty

  • Choose reputable brands known for safety and quality. Check for warranties and customer support options.

By focusing on these factors, you can find a go-kart that suits your needs, provides fun, and ensures safety for you and your kids.
